REVIEW — batch-003

Source: resources/Believers-Responsibility/02-values-not-numbers.md (cleaned, ingested 2026-05-19)

Scope: 6 atomics + 2 glossary terms. Chapter 2 is Hendricks’s Mittelberg-framework chapter (7 generic evangelism values, each applied to UC); rather than atomize every value, I extracted the distinctively UC claims within each value’s section.

Produced

/reference/ (6 atomics)

  1. sexual-immorality-as-root-chasm-per-smm.md — distinctive UC diagnosis of the human condition (Value 2)
  2. smm-1980s-teaching-street-witnessing-doesnt-grow-church.md — corrects common UC self-narrative; cites SMM directly (Value 4)
  3. conscientious-common-sense-uc-introductory-method.md — operational principles of UC’s most successful evangelism era (Value 6)
  4. creative-community-project-as-most-successful-uc-evangelism.md — historical operational claim about Bay Area 1970s (Value 5)
  5. holy-spirit-feminine-and-populist-style.md — distinctive UC pneumatology + age-of-women periodization (Value 7)
  6. mittelberg-seven-values-framework.md — Hendricks’s methodological adoption of the framework as a whole

/glossary/ (2 terms)

  1. holy-spirit.md — UC pneumatology (feminine; co-agent with Jesus; comes through witnessing)
  2. home-church.md — UC pastoral practice (referenced now in 2 atomics; was a gap)

These existing index files will need ## Referenced by updates (the pre-commit hook will validate):

  • glossary/blessing.md — gain backlink from sexual-immorality-as-root-chasm-per-smm
  • glossary/true-parents.md — gain backlink from sexual-immorality-as-root-chasm-per-smm
  • persons/sun-myung-moon.md — gain backlinks from sexual-immorality-as-root-chasm-per-smm and smm-1980s-teaching-street-witnessing-doesnt-grow-church
  • (possibly) reference/home-church-completion-equals-messianic-elevation.md — gains an outbound link to [[home-church]] glossary? No — the existing atomic doesn’t have a [[home-church]] wikilink in its body. I’d need to add one if we want the home-church glossary to backlink it. Recommendation: add [[home-church]] wikilink to that atomic’s body (one-line edit) so the index reflects reality. Will do at finalization if you approve.

Deferred atomic candidates

Reasonable claims I left out — atomize when context demands:

  • Mega-church growth in America (10 → 1,384 churches over 1970–2009) — sociological context; atomize if we ever wrestle a “religion is declining” claim
  • 80% of mega-churches are outside old mainstream Protestantism — sociological/sectarian observation
  • Communities have 7 characteristics (local, identity, enrichment, values, friendship, fun, transparent) — methodological list; if we build a sermon on community, atomize
  • Hendricks’s “culture chasm” vs “sin chasm” distinction — useful frame but currently captured inside mittelberg-seven-values-framework
  • “True Parents are the bridge across the gap separating fallen men and women from God” — strong claim, but already implicit in messiah-completes-physical-marriage-and-family-salvation and core-uc-message-is-the-true-parents-claim
  • The Willow Creek 7-step path (relationship → witness → seeker event → education → small group → ministry → tithing) — methodological; atomize when comparing UC’s actual member-formation process

New tags requested

None. Existing registry covers everything in this batch. (sin, family, lineage, fall, evangelism, true-parents, populism, holy-spirit, eschatology, ecclesiology all already registered.)

Suspected duplicates

None. Cross-batch tension:

  • The creative-community-project atomic notes the “love-bombing” critique without endorsing it — this is wrestling territory adjacent to the grounds-for-the-uc-messianic-claim thread’s “academic NRM critique” sub-vector. When critic sources are eventually ingested, this atomic is one of several seeds for an academic-NRM-critique thread.

Proposed work

Open questions raised

  1. [interesting] Hendricks invokes “age of women / age of the heifer / age of the wife” as periodization without specific DP citation. Where does this periodization sit in Divine Principle? Is it foundational or peripheral to DP’s historical schema? Worth tracing once DP is ingested.

  2. [interesting] The “sexual immorality as cardinal sin” framing is a powerful diagnostic claim that, if accepted, makes the Blessing necessary by construction. But it depends on an empirical premise: that sexual brokenness is downstream of lineage corruption (not the other way around, and not merely psychological/cultural). What is the strongest UC argument for the directionality? And what is the strongest counter? Worth a future thread.

  3. [critical] The mittelberg-seven-values-framework atomic notes a meta-concern: by adopting an evangelical-Christian methodological framework, UC inherits its blind spots. What categories distinctive to UC theology (e.g., indemnity work, lineage transmission, ancestral liberation, spirit world reciprocity) does Mittelberg’s framework miss — and how would a UC-native evangelism framework differ? This is significant enough to warrant its own thread when sufficient UC-distinctive atomics exist.

Proposed threads

None new this batch. The atomics cluster around evangelism practice rather than belief-formation; they will eventually seed a “What is the UC approach to evangelism, and where does it diverge from evangelical-Christian practice?” thread (estimate: 2-3 more batches before there’s enough material).

Stale wrestling

grounds-for-the-uc-messianic-claim (from batch-002) — last touched at creation, 2026-05-19. Same batch context, not stale yet. Will become stale (per ADR-0014’s “3+ batches untouched” rule) if not re-engaged by batch-005.

How to review

  1. Open /staging/batch-003/ in Obsidian or VS Code.
  2. Read each atomic. Edit / reject in place.
  3. The pre-commit hook is now live — at finalization, it will verify tags / word counts / thread sections / counter citations / resource citations / index graph automatically. The hook will fail the commit if:
    • Any tag I used isn’t in _meta/tags.md (shouldn’t happen — I checked)
    • Any atomic body exceeds 300 words (shouldn’t happen — all under)
    • Any index ## Referenced by is missing entries I should have added (likely — see cross-link section above)
  4. Open question for you: should I add [[home-church]] wikilink to the existing home-church-completion-equals-messianic-elevation.md atomic body at finalization? This would make the home-church glossary’s Referenced by complete and accurate, with no semantic change to the atomic. My recommendation: yes.
  5. When ready, say “approved” + any edits / decisions. I’ll:
    • Add [[home-church]] wikilink to the existing atomic if approved
    • Move all 8 staged files to final folders
    • Update ## Referenced by sections in blessing, true-parents, sun-myung-moon (and believers-responsibility if affected)
    • Stage + commit — let the hook validate
    • If hook fails, fix and re-stage (will report)

If anything is wrong with the atomics themselves, point and I’ll revise without finalizing.
