Question. DP names G.W.F. Hegel both as the Abel-side idealism culmination (§2.2) and as the source of left-Hegelian Cain-side atheist-materialism (§2.1). What is DP’s account of Hegel-the-person — Abel-side intellectual betrayed by his followers, ambiguously-positioned figure, or single thinker whose work generated both trajectories by internal contradiction? Does the Hegel split-identification generalize — are other major figures (Kant himself, Nietzsche, Marx, Heidegger) similarly split, with parts of their corpus claimed for Abel-side and parts for Cain-side?

Why it matters. thread-dp-two-types-democracy-vs-arendt-social-question depends on the cleanness of the Cain-type / Abel-type intellectual lineage (one of the support legs for the providential binary). If major figures are routinely split between the two lineages, the typology operates at the level of specific moves or works rather than whole persons — which is methodologically more defensible but undermines the clean trajectory narrative DP’s text presents (Cain-type → Marxism, Abel-type → free world).

Current best guesses. The Hegel case is probably the clearest split-identification, and the simplest reading is that DP treats Hegel’s idealism methodology (Abel-side: spirit-driven dialectic) as separable from Hegel’s content conclusions that Marx inverted (Cain-side: materialist dialectic). This is consistent with how Hegel scholarship itself reads the left-Hegelian / right-Hegelian split. If that reading is correct, the typology does generalize: it operates at the level of specific philosophical moves rather than whole persons, with most major figures contributing material to both lineages depending on which followers received which moves.

Implication: the Cain/Abel typology is best read as a retrospective categorization of specific intellectual moves by their eventual providential trajectory, not as a synchronic identification of whole thinkers as Cain-side or Abel-side. This makes the typology more defensible but weaker as a prediction-generating framework.
