The reasoning chain: (1) Heart is the irrepressible impulse to seek joy through love; (2) love cannot exist without an object partner; (3) God possesses Heart far more intensely than humans; (4) therefore an object partner of love ‘was absolutely necessary for God’ (God Is the God of Heart).
This creation-motivation theory (‘Heart Motivation Theory’) is contrasted with two alternatives: (a) generation theories — Plotinian emanation, Hegelian self-development of Absolute Spirit, Gamow’s Big Bang, Confucian heaven giving birth — in which the universe arises naturally without purposeful agent, leaving evil and confusion as inexplicable natural occurrences without remedy; (b) classical creationism with libertarian divine freedom, in which creation is gratuitous and could have been otherwise.
Lee’s position is closer to (a) in modal structure (necessity) but adds purposive intention via Heart: creation is necessary because of who God is, but it is intentional and oriented toward joy through love. This lets him hold that ‘the negative aspects [of evil] have a cause and are thus capable of being eliminated at their very root’ — unlike generation theories where evil is built into the natural order.
The claim collides directly with classical Christian theism’s commitment to creatio libera — creation as a free divine choice that need not have occurred. If God needed to create, divine aseity (God’s self-sufficiency) is compromised, and the Creator-creature distinction softens. Lee’s reply (implicit): the necessity is internal to God’s nature, not externally imposed; God did not need creation as a benefit but expressed His Heart through it.
