Claim. The split between heaven and hell is not denominational but dispositional: altruists are atmospherically welcomed in the spirit world; egoists are repelled.
Elaboration. SMM states the formula bluntly: “Egoists go to hell, and altruists go to heaven. These two worlds become separated at death” (2.12. Altruism gets you closer to God, 203-99, 1990.6.17). Religion is judged by the same metric: “What is the difference between those who are religious and those who are not? Those who are religious believe in setting the standards of the spirit world throughout their entire lives” (3.1. The standard for religious people is the spirit world, 187-286, 1989.2.12). Heaven and hell are sorted by what one habituated to during earthly life — and SMM denies that the sorting can be done abstractly by labels: “Even famous ministers do not [know where they will go] and they will know where they are once they get there” (3.2.4. The Kingdom of Heaven and us, 91-173, 1977.2.6). Disposition tested under fire decides.
