Claim. Because of the Fall, children must be deliberately educated as citizens of God’s Kingdom — they are citizens of God’s nation, not of any existing earthly nation, and parents must not reproduce themselves in them.
Elaboration. SMM points to the consequence of the Fall in the parent–child relation: “If Adam and Eve had set the straight path, we would not need to educate our children. It would have happened naturally… We are where we are now because of the Fall. As a result of the Fall, humanity has been ignorant of all the fundamentals” (CSG 15.2 §3, 254-246, 1994.2.13). The pedagogical norm is striking: “You should not raise your children to become people like you… ‘I am the way I am, but I will not raise my descendants to be the kind of person I am’” (158-272, 1967.12.29). And the citizenship reframe: “Your sons and daughters are citizens of God’s Kingdom. They are not citizens of any existing nation, but of God’s Kingdom. You must raise them with this kind of purpose in mind” (216-277, 1991.4.7). Parenting is therefore aimed past oneself, toward a polity not yet established on earth.
