Claim. Early-morning services, evening services, and Saturday all-night vigils belong to Unification practice because the satanic realm is the realm of darkness and only by refusing comfort and breaking ordinary sleep schedules can that realm be broken.
Elaboration. SMM justifies the difficult schedule structurally: “From now on, many gatherings will be held at night. This is because we have to break up the realm of darkness” (2.2. Early morning and evening services, and all-night vigils, 11-247, 1961.11.1). Differentiation from comfort-religion is the point — “We must not be the same as other religious groups or people of faith. We must be different from others” (ibid, 84-194, 1976.2.29). The mechanism is concentration: “Night, the deep night, has a strong mysterious quality… in the daytime all our senses are dispersed and unfocused… at night they are not like that, but on the contrary become focused” (ibid, 29-196, 1970.2.28). The full daily cycle gets a four-season prayer pattern — dawn prayer for spring-like hope, afternoon for summer growth, evening for autumn offering, night for winter intimacy with God (ibid, 29-340, 1970.3.14). The implication: when comfort becomes the rule, growth stops and revival is lost.
