Claim. The human portion of responsibility cannot be completed in the spirit world — it must be fulfilled in the physical body on earth, and only then does God dwell within the person.
Elaboration. SMM ties responsibility-completion to the body: “What happens when a person goes to the spirit world? He becomes God’s body. Adam becomes God’s body. This is what Jesus meant when he said, ‘the Father is in me.’ The First Corinthians verse, ‘Do you not know that you are God’s temple?’ confirms that the body is the holy temple where God dwells; it is His house. Then, how can you resemble God? When you reach the stage of completion of your portion of responsibility, God dwells within you, creating oneness between you and God” (4.7. Using our physical selves to fulfill our portion of responsibility, 130-21, 1983.12.11). “Whenever you look at yourself in the mirror in the morning, you should consider how you, as a man or woman, are going to fulfill your portion of responsibility” (ibid, 218-128, 1991.7.14). The window for completing the human portion closes at death; spirit-world progress thereafter is dispositional, not initiating.
