Claim. The 36 Couples are not 36 ceremonial weddings but a compressed restoration of every disconnected ancestor across the Old, New, and Completed Testament Ages — three groups of twelve representing Adam’s, Noah’s, and Jacob’s family lines.
Elaboration. SMM gives the providential math: “The 36 Couples consist of three groups of twelve. The first group symbolizes the Old Testament Age … The second group symbolizes the New Testament Age … The third group symbolizes the Completed Testament Age” (2.1. History of the 36, 72, and 124 Couples, 28-60, 1970.1.3). The vertical-to-horizontal indemnity is explicit: “the 36 Couples are the miniature versions of the 36 vertical generations of ancestors” (ibid, 34-103, 1970.8.29). Their function is protective: “What is the responsibility of the 36 Couples? They are to act as a shield against accusation that has resulted from all the mistakes of past history. … they must become the perfect protective fence that can block Satan out completely” (ibid). The 36 Couples are therefore both ancestor-substitutes (indemnifying generations who failed) and protective-condition (closing accusation routes Satan still holds against history).
