Claim. The four hundred years from Noah to Abraham were not arbitrary. The Noahic 40-day flood judgment, defiled by Ham’s mistake, required restoration through a period of forty — but since the new providence spanned ten generations parallel to Adam→Noah’s ten, each generation became a 40-year indemnity period (day-for-year), totaling 10 × 40 = 400 years.
Elaboration. Per Part 2 Ch 4 §2.5:
- “After the failure of the providence of restoration in Noah’s family, God waited four hundred years, until another ten generations had elapsed, before calling Abraham to carry the burden of the providence.” Set by number-of-generations, the period parallels Adam→Noah and restores it through indemnity.
- The length of 400 derives from the failed Noahic 40-day flood-judgment. The required indemnity is “of the number forty” — but because the dispensation now had to span entire generations (not just days), God replaced day-indemnity with year-indemnity. “A day of the flood was indemnified by a year, just as in Moses’s time when the failure of the forty-day mission to spy out the land was restored through forty years of wandering in the wilderness.”
- Across ten generations Noah→Abraham, the per-generation 40-year indemnity summed to 400 years.
Significance. Two distinct mechanisms appear here, both load-bearing for later DP chronology:
- Day-for-year extension. A day-length indemnity becomes a year-length indemnity when the dispensation must span generations. This is the same mechanism that operates in dp-twelve-spies-failure-extended-wilderness-course-to-forty-years and that DP invokes for the four hundred years of Egyptian slavery (restoring the Noah-Abraham 400) and the four thousand biblical years Adam → Jesus (restoring Forty by yet a further × 10).
- Parallel-by-generation-count. The Noah→Abraham period parallels Adam→Noah by number of generations (ten matches ten), not by year count (1600 vs 400). DP’s parallelism operates at the structural/generational level, allowing periods of vastly different durations to be claimed as parallel.
The doctrine is testable only if the Genesis 11 ten-generation genealogy (Shem → Terah) is read as literal generational chronology, an exegetical commitment shared with the 1600-year claim. Mainstream OT scholarship reads Gen 5 / Gen 11 as stylized lists.
