Claim. Because the human being is a connected being with both a purpose for the whole and a purpose for the individual, desire and value correspondingly bifurcate into the desire/value to be realized (for the whole) and the desire/value to be sought (for the individual).

Elaboration. Lee draws directly on DP p. 33 (Dual Purposes, Dual Desires and Dual Values) to argue that everything in the chain — purpose, desire, value — replicates the dual structure of whole-and-individual. The Sungsang and Hyungsang of the mind each have a purpose for the whole and a purpose for the individual. Each purpose generates a corresponding desire: the “desire to realize value” (for the whole) and the “desire to seek value” (for the individual). And each desire targets a corresponding value: “value to be realized” and “value to be sought.”

This is not just taxonomic. It encodes an ethical claim: living-for-the-sake-of-others (whole) and self-actualization (individual) are not in opposition but are paired aspects of the same created nature. Both desires are legitimate; both values are real. The architecture rules out two errors at once. It rules out collectivism (which absorbs the individual into the whole — Communism, in Lee’s reading) and atomistic individualism (which denies any purpose beyond the self — utilitarianism, pragmatism). Both errors collapse one half of the duality.

The four-row table at the end of the section makes the matrix explicit: Sungsang × {whole, individual} and Hyungsang × {whole, individual}, generating four cells of purpose/desire/value. The Sungsang-whole cell, e.g., is the spirit mind’s desire to realize truth/goodness/beauty/love in serving family/society/world/God. The Hyungsang-individual cell is the physical mind’s desire to seek food/clothing/shelter for one’s own life.

This structural commitment makes the four-position-foundation visible in axiology itself: subject (whole-pole), object (individual-pole), and the give-and-take that harmonizes them produces realized value. The dual structure also explains why Lee can later insist that absolute value preserves rather than abolishes individuality — the individual-pole is constitutive of value, not a deviation from it.
