Claim. The Unification Church uses “family members” rather than “church members” or “believers” because a true family requires parents, and the only parents capable of being the head of one global family are the Messiah united with God.
Elaboration. Moon distinguishes UC vocabulary from broader Christian usage: “In Christianity, religious people use words such as church members and believers, but they have not been able to use the term family member” (1.4. Parents and family members). The argument is conceptual: family members presuppose a family, family presupposes brothers and sisters, brothers/sisters presuppose parents — therefore there is no coherent “family member” status without parents at the head.
The move from this to the Messiah is logical: people today proclaim “one great global family,” but this requires global parents, and “the one who comes as such a parent is none other than the Messiah.” The Messiah, by definition for Moon, is whoever can occupy the global-parent role and become one with God. This reframes messiahship away from atonement-categories and toward parental-categories.
The constraint on who can be such parents is moral: “They cannot be people who are self-centered heads of families or self-centered parents. They are parents who focus on the brothers and sisters, on the family members. Can they connect with evil in the evil world? They must have nothing to do with evil.” The bar is set high — these parents must be free from the satanic world’s contamination and oriented toward all humankind, not just their own tribe or nation.
The theological move concentrates positions: “God, who has created heaven and earth, should stand there. Who should stand there next? The Savior, the representative of God who can bring order to the evil world.” Owner, parent, and center collapse into the Savior-united-with-God figure.
The second passage radicalizes this: UC creates brotherhood among “people who are not actually your brothers and sisters” attending “parents who are not actually your parents.” This is a deliberate transcendence of flesh-and-blood affection — achievable, Moon insists, only through God’s love, not through power, creativity, wisdom, or knowledge. Critics (especially ex-member) often engage here, reading the displacement of biological family as the structural setup for high-control dynamics.
