Claim. Per UC seminarians Harumi Kawamura and Hwa Young Kim (cited by Hendricks), second-generation UC ministry succeeds only when ministry-to-second-generation is initiated, planned, organized, and executed by second-generation peers themselves — not delegated to them by first-generation leadership. Hwa Young Kim: “The answer is based on how [the second-generation] can own their faith. This cannot be substituted by the first generation or by anyone else.”

Kawamura’s 2003-4 retreats for college-aged American Unificationists (many disaffected from the church) succeeded because the retreats were peer-designed. She drew on independent study of NY-area mega-churches: “Generation X religion emphasizes the sensual and experiential, and enjoys incorporating text, image, music, dance, and the body as venues for the expression of religious beliefs.” The retreats incorporated all of those — but the load-bearing feature was peer ownership, not the program content.

Kim’s parallel framing: second-generation small groups need both peer-led informality AND elder-presence for vertical-standard depth. “Gatherings of second-generation alone ‘have a tendency of being horizontal rather than centered on a vertical standard.‘” So: peer-led structure with elders present as life-testimony resources, not as program directors.

Hendricks’s gloss: “the very fact that the events were germinated, planned, organized and executed by peers was the foundation for the Holy Spirit to work.”

Operational consequence for UC leadership: hand over second-generation ministry resources and authorization but not control. Train and pray for peer-leaders, then release. This is the populist-church principle applied to generational ministry specifically.

This atomic also resonates with stark-open-networks-theory-of-religious-growth — second-generation members’ relationship networks are already their peer networks; peer-led ministry naturally extends through those existing open networks.
