Claim. Warren positions the purpose-driven paradigm as a biblical alternative to the seven inadequate drivers, requiring two elements: a new perspective (looking at everything through the lens of five New Testament purposes balanced together) and a process for fulfilling those purposes in practice.
Elaboration. The structural argument is that the seven inadequate drivers each fail by partiality — they elevate one consideration (tradition, leader, money, programs, building, events, seekers) into the controlling principle. The purpose-driven paradigm corrects this by insisting on balance across all five New Testament purposes (a-biblical-paradigm-purpose-driven-churches). The five-purpose schema is not yet enumerated here; this chapter establishes only that there are five and that they must be held in equilibrium.
Warren’s two-element formulation — perspective plus process — is methodologically important. Perspective alone (knowing the five purposes) is sermon material; without an operational process, it produces no organizational change. Process alone (programs and structures) without the perspective produces the program-driven drift Warren already diagnosed. The pairing is meant to resist both ivory-tower theology and atheological pragmatism.
He cites 1 Corinthians 3:13–14 (‘the fire will test the quality of each man’s work’) and 1 Corinthians 3:10–11 (Christ as the only foundation) to argue that what gets built on the right foundation lasts. The chapter’s epigraph and closing verse, Proverbs 19:21 (‘Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails’), is the load-bearing prooftext: human plans, programs, and personalities are perishable; God’s purposes endure. The empirical claim attached is that Saddleback has experienced ‘fifteen years of healthy, consistent growth’ and that ‘thousands of other churches in America, Australia, Europe, and Asia’ are seeing results — this is field-tested, not ‘ivory tower.’ Field-test claims are part of the book’s apologetic structure and will be tested in subsequent chapters.
