Claim. Family ethics is the basis of all ethics: applied to society it becomes social ethics, applied to corporations it becomes corporate ethics, applied to the state it becomes state ethics; relationships in wider society are simply extensions of family relationships modulated by age difference.
Elaboration. Lee operationalizes the family-as-foundation thesis with concrete rules (Social Ethics as an Extension of Family Ethics). If two people differ in age by about thirty years, the senior should love the junior as their child and the junior should respect the senior as parent. If the age difference is ten years or less, treat each other as elder and younger sibling. From this template, a president and public officials stand in parental position to citizens; teachers stand in parental position to students; corporate superiors guide subordinates as elder family members. The horizontal extension of sibling love yields virtues for colleagues, neighbors, nation, and world: reconciliation, tolerance, obligation, fidelity, courtesy, modesty, compassion, cooperation, service, sympathy.
The diagnosis of modern chaos follows directly: ‘family ethics, which is the basis of all ethics, has become weakened,’ and therefore society, nation, and world are in ‘unprecedented chaos.’ The remedy is to rebuild family ethics first; social repair follows. Lee applies this specifically to labor-management relations: Marx and Lenin tried to solve labor-management conflict through violent revolution and failed; the correct solution is corporate ethics grounded in family ethics, where superiors love subordinates as parents and subordinates respect superiors as parents.
This is a strongly populist and conservative position with a long pedigree in Confucian political ethics (the Analects’s extension of filial piety to ruler-subject loyalty). Critics from liberal-political traditions object that family analogies in politics obscure the consensual, contractual, and contestable character of political authority — a president is not a parent and citizens are not children. Worth a thread once a counter atomic from a liberal political-ethics perspective exists.
