Claim. God possesses dual characteristics of Original Sungsang (intangible/functional, the root cause of mind, instinct, life, and physicochemical character) and Original Hyungsang (tangible/material, the root cause of all corporeal aspects), harmonized as one in reciprocal relationship.
Elaboration. The relation between God and creation is Creator-created, cause-effect: Original Sungsang is the root cause of the intangible/functional aspect of all created beings, Original Hyungsang the root cause of the tangible/material aspect (1. Sungsang and Hyungsang). The relation between God and humans is more specific — father-children, by the ‘principle of creation in likeness’ — with Original Sungsang corresponding to the human mind and Original Hyungsang to the human body.
Lee anchors this to Divine Principle: ‘God is the Subject in whom the dual characteristics of original internal nature [Original Sungsang] and original external form [Original Hyungsang] are in harmony’ (DP, 19). The chain-of-being descent runs: in minerals, Sungsang manifests as physicochemical law; in plants as life (Lee cites experiments showing plants react to human minds); in animals as instinct with intellect/emotion/will but no self-consciousness; in humans as self-conscious mind.
Lee positions this as a third way beyond spiritualism and materialism, which he characterizes as one-sided: spiritualism takes only Original Sungsang as universal cause, materialism only Original Hyungsang. UT calls its position a ‘Theory of Oneness’ or ‘Unification Theory’ — neither purely spiritual nor purely material because the dual characteristics are not separate but harmonized in one God. This claim is the metaphysical foundation for the entire UT system; if Sungsang and Hyungsang are merely metaphorical, the four position foundation, give-and-take action, and the two-stage creation structure all lose their warrant. Critics from monistic spiritualism (e.g., Berkeleyan idealism) and monistic materialism (Marxism) both engage on the same fault line: whether the unity of mind and matter in God is coherent or merely verbal.
