Elaboration. Lee opens ut-08-theory-of-history by distinguishing description from interpretation. A theory of history must answer (a) origin, (b) law-governed direction, and (c) goal — without which fundamental solutions to world problems are impossible. The motive is practical: ‘finding fundamental solutions for today’s complicated world problems is impossible without a clear and correct view of history.’
The argument is framed by competition with Marxism. The materialist view of history, by defining history as class struggle and projecting inevitable Communist society, gave Communists ‘a clear vision of the future’ that functioned as the driving force for revolutionary fervor. Lee concedes the rhetorical power of this vision — ‘the confrontation between the Communist sphere and the democratic sphere was a confrontation between views of history’ — and argues that the free world lacked any comparable historical philosophy until the Unification view emerged.
The claim positions UC as supplying what democratic capitalism could not: a teleology grounded in theology that nevertheless claims to be law-governed and ‘scientific’ in the sense of identifying real regularities. This sets up the whole chapter’s project of articulating laws of creation and laws of restoration. The framing is unusual among 20th-century theologies, most of which avoided philosophy-of-history claims after Hegel and Marx were discredited; UC instead doubles down. Critics typically engage at exactly this point: whether the ‘laws’ UT enumerates are descriptive regularities or post-hoc rationalizations of providential narrative.
