REVIEW — batch-002

Source: resources/Believers-Responsibility/01-church-growth-begins-with-god.md (cleaned, ingested 2026-05-19)

Scope: 8 atomics + 2 glossary terms + 1 person note. This is a substantive chapter — 5000 words across 10 sections — and the batch reflects that. Several candidate atomics deferred (see below).

Produced

/reference/ (8 atomics)

  1. personhood-as-absolute-value.md — God is a person; personhood is the absolute value; religions arise around persons (DP “central figures”)
  2. hyung-jin-moon-named-heir-2010-special-proclamation.md — what the June 2010 Special Proclamation says (succession-relevant, will inform a future thread)
  3. uc-is-properly-a-church-via-blessed-couples.md — Hendricks’s defense of “church” as the proper word, via body/bride of Christ
  4. moons-authority-from-personal-call-by-jesus.md — UC’s chain of authority traces Jesus → Moon, not God or angels
  5. messiah-completes-physical-marriage-and-family-salvation.md — the load-bearing UC distinctive: physical/familial completion of messianic mission
  6. core-uc-message-is-the-true-parents-claim.md — Hendricks’s apologetic centerpiece against “peace-not-church” framing
  7. home-church-completion-equals-messianic-elevation.md — striking 1983 SMM quote on distributed messiahship
  8. dp-popular-acclaim-conditional-on-fulfilled-responsibility.md — conditional providence; ties to batch-001’s believers-responsibility-as-third-providential-phase

/glossary/ (2 terms)

  1. blessing.md — the central sacrament; sets up the physical-rebirth/lineage mechanism
  2. true-parents.md — the central title; sets up the two-person Messiah doctrine

/persons/ (1 note — first one in vault)

  1. sun-myung-moon.md — index page; the 7 atomics/glossary entries that backlink to him justify creating this now

Deferred atomic candidates (worth atomizing later)

I extracted 8 from a candidate list of ~26. The discarded weren’t bad — they were too narrow, too historical-anecdote, or duplicative of stronger atomics. Worth atomizing in a later batch when the context demands them:

  • Powerful religious movements arise in the name of a singular person — empirical claim, partially covered by personhood-as-absolute-value
  • UC dissolves as institution when mission completes — striking eschatology, but tangential to the populist argument
  • Holy Spirit follows witnessing (not precedes it) — methodologically important, defer to a chapter that argues it
  • Oakland UC grew from 3 to several hundred (1971–decade) — historical anecdote
  • Late-1970s strategy shift from street-witnessing to home church — historical context, partially in home-church-completion-equals-messianic-elevation
  • Hendricks: UC needs to repent for Blessing-without-ministry — strong internal critique, captured in the blessing glossary note; an atomic version is worth pulling later when wrestling threads emerge
  • Christian evangelism > interfaith projects for world peace — Hendricks’s apologetic claim, defer to chapter where it’s argued at length
  • Pentecostalism (Azusa Street 1905) as populist exemplar — sociological, atomize when chapter 3 elaborates

New tags requested

Atomics use only registered tags. Four new tags would have helped — flagging now:

Proposed tagJustificationRecommendation
personhoodFoundational UC concept (God-is-a-person, persons-as-vehicle); recurringAdd
ecclesiologyThe “what-is-church” theme; recurs in this chapter and beyondAdd
eschatologyEnd-of-history claims (institutional dissolution, restored kingdom, messianic completion)Add
holy-spiritUC pneumatology; recurring across many sourcesAdd

If you approve, I’ll retro-tag these 8 atomics where they fit (mostly personhood for atomic 1; ecclesiology for atomic 3; eschatology for 3, 5; holy-spirit not used by current atomics but earmarked).

Suspected duplicates

None within batch-002. Cross-link with batch-001:

  • dp-popular-acclaim-conditional-on-fulfilled-responsibility cross-references believers-responsibility-as-third-providential-phase — adjacent claims, not duplicates. Atomic 8 talks about the conditional structure; the batch-001 atomic talks about the agent structure.

Updates to existing files (at finalization)

When this batch finalizes, the following existing files need updates to their ## Referenced by sections (pre-commit hook will validate; for now, manual):

  • glossary/believers-responsibility.md — add backlink from dp-popular-acclaim-conditional-on-fulfilled-responsibility.md
  • (No other existing index files affected)

Proposed work

Open questions raised

  1. [critical] Hendricks (writing 2010, when Moon was still alive) reads the Special Proclamation as bequeathing absoluteness to Hyung Jin Nim and Yeon Ah Nim. Post-2012 (after Moon’s death), this reading has fractured — Hak Ja Han, Hyung Jin Moon (Sanctuary Church), and others advance competing succession claims. What is the strongest case for each reading? This is thread-worthy once we ingest sources from each side. (Source: hyung-jin-moon-named-heir-2010-special-proclamation)

  2. [interesting] If popular acclaim for the Second Advent is conditional on human responsibility, what theological status does the failure of that responsibility have? Jesus’ crucifixion is the paradigm case in Christianity — does UC have a similar account for failed responsibility in the Second Advent era (e.g., the broader public not recognizing the True Parents during Moon’s lifetime)? (Source: dp-popular-acclaim-conditional-on-fulfilled-responsibility)

  3. [interesting] Hendricks claims home-church completion “truly elevates one as messiah.” How does UC theology handle the relationship between one True Parents couple and a potentially distributed messianic elevation? Is this a distinct concept, an extension, or a metaphor? Worth tracing through CSG once that’s ingested. (Source: home-church-completion-equals-messianic-elevation)

Proposed threads

1. “What grounds the UC claim that Sun Myung Moon and Hak Ja Han are the Messiah?”

We now have 5 atomics clustering around this question:

Plus believers-responsibility-as-third-providential-phase from batch-001 (the providential setup).

That’s enough to seed a thread. The counter-argument vector is wide: evangelical Christian critique (Jesus alone suffices), academic / sociological critique (charismatic-founder dynamics in NRMs), ex-member critique (specific testimony), and intra-UC schism critique (succession disputes).

My recommendation: defer the thread to a later batch — first, ingest at least one resource that provides a critic’s perspective (an evangelical critique, an academic NRM study, or an ex-member account). Without that, the counter-argument section would be weak / placeholder, violating ADR-0006’s “must cite a real critic.” Add as a “stale, not yet seeded” item if I haven’t actioned it by batch-005.

Stale wrestling

N/A — no threads exist yet.

How to review

  1. Open /staging/batch-002/ in Obsidian or VS Code. The folder structure mirrors final (reference/, glossary/, persons/).
  2. Read each atomic. Edit / reject in place.
  3. Verify the ## Referenced by sections in blessing.md, true-parents.md, sun-myung-moon.md accurately reflect the backlinks (I built these by hand; the pre-commit hook isn’t built yet).
  4. Decide on the 4 new tags.
  5. Decide on the 1 proposed thread: defer to batch-005 (my recommendation), or build the thread sooner with a placeholder counter, or skip entirely.
  6. Say “approved” (with any edits noted) and I’ll:
    • Move accepted files to final folders
    • Update _meta/tags.md with approved tags
    • Retro-add tags to atomics
    • Update glossary/believers-responsibility.md’s ## Referenced by section
    • Manually verify all index sections match the wikilink graph
    • Commit

If anything is off, point and I’ll revise without finalizing.
