Batch Review — csg-01-secondary-pass (Phase 2)

Source: Aggregate. Material from resources/CSG/Book01/csg-01-01-the-original-being-of-god.md, csg-01-02-god-and-the-work-of-creation.md, csg-01-03-the-history-of-the-providence-of.md, and csg-01-04-true-father-s-insights-on-god.md. Scope: 2 new atomics from Phase 1’s surfaced deferred candidates + 4 threads with web-searched counter-arguments. Date: 2026-05-21

This is the staged second phase of the CSG Book 1 secondary rigor pass. Phase 1 (three separate commits, 2026-05-21) brought Ch 1-3 REVIEWs to current-rigor parity, applied retro tags, body-strengthened one polemic-exposed atomic, promoted dropped questions, and added divine-constraint + han to the tag registry. This Phase 2 stages the new content that those edits surfaced: two deferred-now-promotable atomics, and four threads engaging counter-positions across the Ch 1-3 (+ Ch 4) atomic corpus.

New tags requested

None for Phase 2. The two new tags introduced in Phase 1 (han, divine-constraint) are now in the registry and used by Thread 4 and selectively by retro-tagged Ch 1 atomics. No further additions needed.

Note: the blessing tag (Theology — core) is used on csg-spirit-world-blessing-of-ancestors.md. Verified registered before staging.

Promotion candidates from Phase 1 — decisions

Phase 1 surfaced four deferred-candidate claims in the rewritten REVIEWs. Phase 2 decisions:

SourceClaimDecision
Ch 1 §4.2 (218-263)God Himself had to developPromoted as csg-god-himself-had-to-develop.md. Ch 4 cluster (divine grief/constraint) gives cluster support.
Ch 3 §4.1 (172-53)Spirit-world Blessing of ancestorsPromoted as csg-spirit-world-blessing-of-ancestors.md. Distinct doctrinal claim about restoration’s reach across death.
Ch 3 §4.1 (146-275)God is looking at three generationsDeferred. Provisional candidate; better timed with Book 9 (family) batches where generational mechanism has cluster support.
Ch 1 §2.2 (98-224)True Parents represent God’s form in spirit worldNot promoted. Substantially covered by existing true-parents glossary and csg-true-parents-as-gods-embodied-form (Ch 3).

Counter-argument sourcing notes

Per the secondary-pass plan, threads use web-searched primary critics where possible, with provisional disclaimers otherwise. Status per thread:

  • Thread 1 (Jehovah-as-angel): Web-searched. Mark S. Smith’s The Origins of Biblical Monotheism (Smith 2001, Oxford UP) was confirmed via WebSearch. Michael Heiser’s The Unseen Realm (Heiser 2015, Lexham Press) was confirmed and proved an unexpectedly sharper counter — Heiser’s binitarian “two YHWHs” reading treats the visible YHWH as divine (pre-incarnate Son), not as a created angel, so it rejects SMM’s core move from a position closer to SMM’s instinct than mainstream theology. Maimonides Guide for the Perplexed II.6 cited from established scholarly tradition (c.1190).
  • Thread 2 (Why God Had No Choice But to Create): Aquinas Summa Ia.q.45 (1265) and Calvin Institutes I.16 (1559) cited from canonical primary sources. Process Theism citations (Whitehead 1929; Hartshorne 1948) from established scholarly tradition.
  • Thread 3 (Mandatory Structure of Restoration): Calvin Institutes III.11 (Calvin 1559) confirmed via WebSearch as the canonical sola-fide locus. Modern Reformed citations (Sproul 1995; Piper 2002) from established theological tradition.
  • Thread 4 (Love Above Omnipotence + Divine Constraint): Aquinas Summa Ia.q.25 a.3 (Aquinas 1265) confirmed via WebSearch as the canonical omnipotence locus. Ockham Quodlibetal Questions (c.1322) and Plantinga (1974, God, Freedom, and Evil) from established philosophical-theological tradition.

No thread carries a “source not located — provisional” disclaimer. All counter-arguments are cited with primary or canonical sources.

Source-verification caveat: Specific Block scholarship on Mosaic theophany (mentioned in plan) did not surface clear primary citations via WebSearch; the thread does not depend on Block specifically, so this gap does not affect the counter-argument’s hook-validity. If a future pass wants to incorporate Block, search Daniel I. Block’s Deuteronomy (NIVAC 2012) or Judges, Ruth (NAC 1999).

Suspected duplicates / cross-batch notes

  • csg-god-himself-had-to-develop.md is adjacent to csg-god-miserable-throughout-history (Ch 4) — Ch 4 atomic gives the affective dimension (God in continuous grief); the new atomic gives the developmental dimension (God moving through experiential states). Both stand; mutual linking in related:.
  • csg-spirit-world-blessing-of-ancestors.md is adjacent to csg-lineage-change-required-for-direct-sonship (Ch 3) — Ch 3 atomic specifies the mechanism (Messiah accomplishes lineage transfer); new atomic specifies the retroactive scope of that transfer. Both stand.
  • Thread 4 (love-above-omnipotence + divine-constraint) deliberately pulls Ch 4 atomics into orbit. Per the secondary-pass plan, this is acceptable scope expansion, flagged here: the thread engages Ch 4 atomics (csg-god-bound-by-own-law, csg-god-could-not-function-as-god, csg-god-is-prisoner-confined-by-love) but does not mutate them.

Updates to existing files

On finalize, the following backlink amendments are expected (auto-generated by the hook for Person/Glossary):

  • Atomic **Referenced by.** manual annotations are NOT auto-generated. If the user wants the existing manual annotations on Ch 1 atomics updated to reflect Phase 2’s new wikilinks, that’s a separate task.
  • No Person/Glossary backlinks are added by Phase 2 (no new Person or Glossary notes; no wikilinks from new atomics or threads to existing Person/Glossary notes that aren’t already linked).

Proposed work

Open questions raised

No new open questions raised by Phase 2. The four threads engage existing questions:

  • Thread 1 engages q-jehovah-as-angel-and-ot-revelation.md (Ch 3 promoted).
  • Thread 2 engages q-what-triggered-love-to-bud-in-eternal-god.md (Ch 2 promoted in secondary pass).
  • Thread 3 engages the “justification-through-attendance vs. sola fide” question that was flagged in Ch 3 REVIEW but not promoted as a separate question (it collapses into Thread 3’s claim).
  • Thread 4 engages q-is-gods-inability-to-punish-satan-limitation-or-choice.md and q-if-god-is-confined-in-what-sense-is-he-omnipotent.md (both Ch 4 promoted).

When the user finalizes Phase 2, the question files should have their answered-by: frontmatter populated with the corresponding thread wikilink, OR status changed from open to answered if the thread settles the question (Thread 1 explicitly does NOT settle Q-jehovah — both end in “still wrestling”). My read: leave all four questions at status: open and add the thread wikilinks to answered-by: as in-progress references.

Proposed threads

No further threads proposed beyond the four in this batch. After finalize, the next high-priority thread is likely:

  • Adoption vs. Direct Lineage at the Blessing — anchors include csg-lineage-change-required-for-direct-sonship, csg-nt-believers-as-adopted-children, csg-spirit-world-blessing-of-ancestors (this batch). Counter: Pauline adoption theology (Romans 8, Galatians 4; Stott, Moo). Engages q-adopted-vs-direct-lineage-what-changes-at-blessing.md. Wait for DP Ch on Blessing to be ingested before seeding.

Stale wrestling

N/A — the threads in this batch are the first threads engaging this material. The “still wrestling” notes inside each thread’s Response section flag unresolved points within those threads, not stale-wrestling across batches.

Cost report

Pilot mode (pure chat) — cost visibility via Anthropic dashboard. WebSearch calls: ~4 (Heiser publication year, Block scholarship, Aquinas Ia.q.25, Calvin Institutes III.11).

How to review

  1. Open /staging/csg-01-secondary-pass/ in Obsidian or VS Code. Two subfolders: reference/ (2 atomics) and threads/ (4 threads). REVIEW.md at root.
  2. Atomics: verify claim accuracy against source quotes (each atomic’s sources: frontmatter links to the resource section). Check body length (the hook already enforces ≤300 words).
  3. Threads: focus on the Counter-argument section of each. Ask:
    • Is the steel-manned position accurately represented?
    • Are the cited critics genuinely the strongest exponents of the counter-position, not strawmen?
    • Is the Response defensive without being dismissive?
    • Do the “Still wrestling” notes in each Response identify a real unresolved point?
  4. Promotion-candidate decisions: review the table above. If a deferred candidate should be promoted now (e.g., the three-generations claim from Ch 3 §4.1), say so.
  5. Question-answering linkage: confirm the policy on answered-by: for the four engaged questions (my read in §Open questions raised — populate answered-by: but leave status: open).
  6. Tag use: confirm blessing on the new ancestors atomic is appropriate (vs. e.g. routing to four-position-foundation or family).
  7. Say “approved” and I’ll:
    • Move reference/*.md to /reference/.
    • Move threads/*.md to /threads/.
    • Copy this REVIEW.md to _meta/batch-reviews/csg-01-secondary-pass-phase-2.md.
    • Populate answered-by: frontmatter on the four engaged questions per the policy you confirm.
    • Run the pre-commit hook against the finalized set.
    • Commit as a single atomic batch (process-note: this is the Phase 2 finalize of the CSG Book 1 secondary rigor pass; the staging folder remains in git per ADR-0009’s “staging folders are retained” rule).

If anything is off, point and I’ll revise without finalizing.
