Definition. In Unification theology, True Parents is the title for Sun Myung Moon and his wife Hak Ja Han — held by UC believers to be the first married couple in human history to have fully realized God’s ideal of conjugal love, and therefore the messianic agents who restore humanity’s lost lineage.
Expanded. The title carries dense theological freight:
- Restoration of lineage: All human beings, per Divine Principle, inherited a fallen lineage at the Fall. The True Parents are the first couple in restored lineage and are thus the parents (genealogically and spiritually) of restored humanity.
- Two-person Messiah: UC theology holds that the messianic mission requires a married couple, not an individual. Jesus’ failure to marry (per UC reading) is precisely why a Second Coming is required (see messiah-completes-physical-marriage-and-family-salvation).
- Cosmic title: Per a March 2010 statement from Korean Unification Church Headquarters quoted in the-unificationist-message: True Parents are “the first in all history and will eternally be the one and only Returning Lord, Peace King and King of Kings.”
- Succession: A June 2010 “Special Proclamation” attributed to Sun Myung Moon names Hyung Jin Moon as “representative heir” of the True Parents’ authority (see hyung-jin-moon-named-heir-2010-special-proclamation). Interpretations of this and related succession texts diverge sharply within the post-2012 movement.
The True Parents claim is the central UC distinctive — without it, UC is recognizably evangelical Christian; with it, UC is a distinct religious tradition (see core-uc-message-is-the-true-parents-claim).
