Claim. In the Completed Testament Age salvation comes not through faith alone or works alone but through attending the living God who has appeared on earth as True Parents.
Elaboration. SMM periodizes the providence in three modes: “Up until now, a life of faith brought salvation through faith, but from now on you attain salvation through attendance” (2.1. Establishing a heavenly life through attendance, 150-213, 1961.4.15). The three stages are not displaced but layered — “Even in the Completed Testament Age, we need to do works, we need to have faith, and we also need to lead a life of attendance. There are the stages of formation, growth and completion which remain; these cannot be separated” (ibid, 161-218, 1987.2.15). The doctrinal warrant is that the Fall blocked direct attendance: “Originally, if humankind had not fallen, we would be following our normally intended path by attending God.” The era of attendance is thus the era of restoring the Edenic relationship that was lost. The corollary is that the goal of attendance is not extra merit but “to receive God’s love” (ibid, 78-30, 1975.5.1) — attendance is the relational form salvation actually takes.
