Claim. Humanity needs the messiah not primarily as forgiver of sins but as True Parent — the one who can re-establish the lineage that fallen people cannot fix on their own.
Elaboration. SMM states the providential logic: “The reason human beings need a messiah is so they can be saved. Then, what is the original starting point from which salvation can occur? It is returning to the point of contact with God’s love. … But the fundamental problem lies in the lineage. Any problems related to the bloodline cannot be resolved by fallen human beings. That is why humankind needs the Messiah” (1.3. Reasons for receiving the Blessing, 35-159, 1970.10.13). The Messiah’s role is therefore parental rather than juridical: “Who is the Messiah? He is the true parent. Then why do people need true parents? It is because they need to be engrafted to the original lineage through true parents’ love. Fallen humankind cannot rid itself of the original sin without the advent of true parents” (ibid, 35-216, 1970.10.19). The Savior cannot occupy the position of fallen parents but must stand in the unfallen Adam-and-Eve position and “give rebirth to humanity in the position of true parents” (ibid, 22-269, 1969.5.4).
