Claim. Because God’s purpose of creation was the family four-position foundation (God-husband-wife-children) and the fall placed it under Satan, history is patterned with periods symbolizing the number four — 40 days, 40 years, 400 years — as conditional indemnity to restore that foundation numerologically.

Elaboration. The law of the restoration of the number four (C. Law of the Restoration of the Number Four) connects providence to family theology. The purpose-of-creation was ‘to realize His love through the family four-position-foundation’ — God, Adam, Eve, children. Had Adam and Eve perfected themselves, this God-centered four-position would have been formed; instead, a Satan-centered four-position formed, putting creation under Satan. Restoring God’s family four-position became ‘the central purpose of history.’

Before the substantial restoration could happen, God conducted ‘symbolic, conditional providences’ establishing time periods symbolizing the number four. Biblical examples: Noah’s 40-day flood, Moses’ 40 years in the wilderness, 400 years of Christian persecution under Rome. After such indemnity periods, ‘the four position foundation was restored conditionally, and God’s providence was able to proceed to a new stage.’

The law extends beyond Israel: Lee cites Toynbee’s observation that ‘unification was accomplished after a period of four centuries of confusion’ in multiple civilizations: Hellenic World (Peloponnesian War to Roman unification, 431-31 BC, ~400 years); Chinese Contending States to Ch’in/Han (634-221 BC, ~400 years); Japanese feudal anarchy (Kamakura-Ashikaga to Tokugawa, 1185-1597, ~400 years); Japan’s 40-year colonial rule over Korea (1905-1945). Toynbee ‘could not clarify the reason’ for these recurrences; UT’s law of the number four supplies it.

The doctrine is striking because it makes numerology historically predictive. Periods of confusion that last four centuries are not coincidence but providential structure. The implicit claim is that East-Asian and Mediterranean histories follow the same providential pattern as Israelite history because all are providentially governed.

Critics typically push: (a) the ‘period of confusion’ boundaries are flexible enough that 400-year spans can be found almost anywhere with enough latitude; (b) why precisely four — derived from the four-position foundation argument, but post-hoc-fittable. UT’s response is that the numerological structure derives from the structure of the original creation purpose itself. The doctrine also raises a hard question about blessing and family theology: if all of history’s number-four periods aim at the family four-position foundation, then the true-parents/Blessing program is the literal content of providential history.
