Claim. Because fallen Adam stood midway between God and Satan, God could not work providence through him directly; instead God separated his sons — Abel to God’s side, Cain to Satan’s side — and this Cain-Abel separation, with Cain required to obey Abel, became the template for all subsequent restoration, expanding through individual-family-tribe-people-nation-world levels.

Elaboration. The law of separation (B. Law of Separation) explains why providence proceeds bifurcatedly. Originally created Adam was supposed to relate only to God. The fall created a ‘midway position’ — Adam related to both God and Satan, so when God tried to work through Adam, the condition existed for Satan to do the same. This unprincipled situation forced God to separate Adam’s sons: Abel to God’s side, Cain to Satan’s side.

The restoration mechanism: ‘Cain, who was on Satan’s side, was required to obey Abel, who was on God’s side.’ Cain’s failure (murdering Abel) inaugurated sinful history. But Abel’s loyalty ‘to the end’ became a ‘foundation of heart’ on which God could ‘throughout history, separate people from the Satanic world over to God’s side.’

The pattern then expands sequentially: ‘God gradually expanded the sphere of the good side by next establishing a family on the good side, then a tribe, a people, a nation, and finally a world on the good side.’ Satan mirrors the expansion on the evil side, preceding God’s work at each level (see law of false preceding true).

Critically, the good/evil designation is relative: ‘the good side and the evil side are not good and evil in an absolute sense. The side relatively closer to God’s providence was separated to the good side, and the side relatively farther from God’s providence was separated to the evil side.’ This relativity prevents UT from being a simple Manichean dualism — today’s good side may become tomorrow’s relatively evil side as providence advances.

Lee applies the schema to the late 20th century: free world vs Communist world were the two blocs (recognizing religion vs denying religion). The good side subjugates the evil side; ultimately ‘unification of the free world and the Communist world will be accomplished… when the Messiah is received,’ because ‘unification between Cain and Abel will be accomplished through the Messiah, who comes as the third Adam.’

The Cain-Abel template is one of UT’s most operationally consequential doctrines — it structures everything from individual sibling dynamics to international relations. Worth a thread on whether the relative good/evil framing genuinely escapes Manicheanism or whether it just relocates it.
