Claim. SMM designed the One Hope boat — short, fast, transportable, unsinkable — as the technical embodiment of the marine providence: a vessel whose engineering itself testifies that Heaven’s plans for the ocean cannot be defeated by storms.
Elaboration. SMM gives the name its providential gloss: “What ‘One Hope’ means is that it is the first hope of the ocean. In the past, all other ships that were thirty to fifty feet long sailed proudly as luxury liners. Yet our ships, although small in size, are quite fast … They did not know that One Hope is a ship that will never sink” (1.2. One Hope: a ship that cannot sink, 270-64, 1995.5.4). The boat was the foundation of a global product line: “Based on this twenty eight foot long boat, we have also built other boats that are thirtyeight feet, fifty-two feet, ninety-eight feet, and 108 feet in length. The 108-foot long boat can even maneuver out in the rough waters of Alaska” (262-240, 1994.8.1). Engineering is the substrate of True Parents’ coastal-strategy preparation — the boats had to come before the coastal congregation.
