Claim. Ocean Church is a providential form of ecclesial life — Unification men occupying every coast of the world, holding Sunday services aboard ship, and dominating the marine resource frontier as a religious vocation rather than a commercial trade.
Elaboration. SMM frames the program as world-historical religious organization: “From now, what am I going to do with Ocean Church? It is not simply about going out to the ocean for training. The purpose is to bring dominion over and love the ocean. I don’t intend to do something about the ocean by dominating it. I am going to nurture the ocean in accordance with the original intention of the Creator” (2.1. The ocean providence centering on North America, 128-249, 1983.8.28). The scale is global occupation: “Unification Church men should live at every ocean port and coastal base in the world. If we can become a presence in these areas we will be in a position to influence and guide all the cultures of the world” (116-326, 1982.1.2). The connection to Home Church is direct: “When you do Home Church, the three hundred boats are Home Church boats. It is an Ocean Church” (108-217, 1980.10.5). Coast = ecclesial frontier.
