A husband and wife loving each other carries four cosmic significations: their union manifests God (since they represent His Yang/Yin), completes the creation of the universe (since perfected couplehood is the final creative stage), signifies the unity of humankind (each spouse representing half of humanity), and perfects the family (each representing half of the family).
Elaboration. Lee elevates marriage from biological/sociological event to cosmological summit (B. A Harmonious Being of Yang and Yin). The four-point argument:
(1) Manifestation of God: God’s dual characteristics of Yang and Yin become substantially visible only in male-female union. When the couple loves horizontally centered on God, His vertical love “dwells there” and creates life — this is the structural rationale for the blessing sacrament.
(2) Completion of universe: “If Adam and Eve had not fallen, the creation of the universe would have been completed upon the occasion of their perfection.” Because they fell as individuals before becoming a perfected couple, creation remains literally unfinished, and God’s subsequent providence is “the dispensation of re-creation” aimed at producing perfected couples. Dominion over creation requires couplehood — “neither a man alone nor a woman alone can become a ruler.”
(3) Unity of humankind: With the world population over six billion, each spouse “possesses the value of representing over three billion people.” The math is striking and intentional: conjugal love is not private affection but a representative act for half of humanity.
(4) Perfection of family: Each spouse represents all the men or all the women of the family unit, making the conjugal bond the family’s structural center.
The operational consequence is asserted bluntly: “the harmonious union of husband and wife is a key to solving social and world problems.” Modern easy marriage and easy divorce, by destroying the sacredness, destroy the cosmic mechanism. This is the theological backbone of UC’s heavy investment in true-parents-mediated matching and Blessing ceremonies — they are not pious customs but the actual re-creation of the universe’s incomplete final stage.
