Claim. Whereas a human being is a miniature universe in terms of constituent elements, a family is a miniature universe in terms of order — possessing both vertical order (grandparents-parents-children-grandchildren) and horizontal order (husband-wife, brothers-sisters), and love is realized only through this order.

Elaboration. Lee distinguishes two senses of “microcosm” (B. A Harmonious Being of Yang and Yin): the individual person miniaturizes the universe in content (integrating all elements), while the family miniaturizes the universe in structure (replicating vertical and horizontal order).

Vertical order generates vertical love: downward parental love and upward filial love. Horizontal order generates horizontal love: conjugal love between spouses and sibling love between brothers and sisters. These four directional loves are not abstractions but the only concrete forms in which divine love appears on earth. Lee will later argue (against Kierkegaard and Jaspers) that any concept of “love of God” or “love of neighbor” untethered from these four family-anchored directional loves is dangerously vague.

From these emerge family ethics — vertical values (parental affection + filial piety) and horizontal values (conjugal harmony + sibling friendship). These then extend outward: social ethics, business ethics, school ethics, love of nation, love of enemy, conservation movement — all derivative of family ethics. The chain runs family → society → nation → world, with the family as the irreducible structural unit.

The inversion is significant: ethics is not deduced from rational principles (Kant) or social contract (Hobbes/Locke) but extended from family love-order. This is why family breakdown necessarily produces social, national, and global breakdown — the upstream order has collapsed. The claim collides with modern individualist ethics that treat the family as one institution among many; Lee treats it as the generative template for every other institution. Worth a thread once a counter atomic exists on whether non-family ethical traditions (Stoic, Buddhist, Confucian state-ethics) can be subsumed under this scheme.
