Claim. Pledge Four pledges the family to build a universal family encompassing heaven and earth and perfect a world of freedom, peace, unity, and happiness — extending family logic to one global household with no second.
Elaboration. “Our family, the owner of Cheon Il Guk, pledges to build the universal family encompassing heaven and earth, which is God’s ideal of creation, and perfect the world of freedom, peace, unity and happiness, by centering on true love” (5.2. The content of the Family Pledge, 260-158, 1994.5.2). The exclusivity claim is explicit: “everyone belongs to one global family — not two — which is centered on God” (ibid, 260-191, 1994.5.8). The freedoms named are not individual liberties: “The freedom referred to here is not that of an individual, but that of the people belonging to the one global extended family. This is the same for the peace and happiness.” The implication: SMM’s universalism rejects both nationalist particularism and individualist liberalism — universality is family-shaped, with shared belonging as the unit, and “the whole of humanity will find happiness” only when this family-pattern globalizes.
