Claim. Sea-fishing — sitting motionless for hours, gazing at horizon and water — is for SMM a contemplative discipline (the “spiritual path of fishing” of East-Asian tradition) and the conditions for prayer-shaped mental clarity that ordinary land-life destroys.
Elaboration. SMM grounds the discipline in personal practice: “Hunting is exercise for the sake of your physical health, and fishing is for the sake of your mental health. You tend to reflect on your life and think a lot when sitting down and fishing … You can analyze your past and plan for your future. It can be the most important period of time for us … This is called the spiritual path of fishing in the East” (1.3. The future leisure industry that will be spotlighted is fishing, 252-208, 1993.12.30). Solitude at sea sharpens thought: “when I go out to the sea, I can think more comprehensively. Because of this, I love the ocean a great deal” (79-270, 1975.9.1). And the discipline rewires desire itself: “After fishing for a couple of years, you will want to free the fish and put aside all thoughts of eating the fish just caught. That is the true spiritual path. The desire to eat simply vanishes.”
