Claim. Hell was not created by God — it emerged as a “warehouse” to manage the false people the Fall produced, and people enter it by self-selection rather than divine judgment.
Elaboration. SMM denies that hell expresses any positive divine intent: “God did not make hell. You don’t build a house after you have bought a rubbish bin. You acquire a rubbish bin after building the house” (2.5. Hell has no relationship with the love of God, 148-28, 1986.10.4). Entry is volitional and physiological, not punitive: “God never sends people to hell. When people go to the spirit world, they go to hell on their own account. When people who live an evil life go to places of goodness they cannot breathe … they go to hell, to a darker place, and say, ‘Ah ha, this is the place!’ That is hell” (ibid, 200-192, 1990.2.25). The deeper definition is relational deprivation: “Hell is a place that has no relationship to God’s love, life or lineage or even to God Himself” (ibid, 201-97, 1990.3.11). The doctrinal payoff is that hell is remediable — God can and must liberate it, because His parental love cannot abandon any child to eternal isolation.
