Elaboration. SMM says man represents God’s plus characteristics and woman God’s minus characteristics; their union is “the unification of God’s plus and minus characteristics” (CSG 4.7 §1, 9-83, 1960.4.16). Together they become a harmonious being resembling God’s original internal nature. This makes husband and wife a union that represents “the whole of God,” not merely two social roles. Their love is holy because it is the occasion where heaven and earth are embraced and the universe becomes one. The section adds that by encountering God’s love through conjugal oneness, human beings stand next to God and inherit participation in God’s ownership.
