Claim. An ideal husband and wife appear where both live for each other rather than for themselves.

Elaboration. SMM defines a true husband as one who says, “Since I am born for your sake, I will live for you and die for you,” and says the same is true of a true wife (CSG 4.7 §3, 77-106, 1975.4.1). An ideal couple appears when spouses serve one another and their hearts converge into one. The section rejects money, power, honor, and even humanistic attraction as adequate centers; bride and groom should become one through “God’s original love.” SMM also uses ordinary finances to test the point: love is present when spouses can give and receive freely, not when they protect separate ownership against each other.
