Claim. Jejudo’s geography — a deep-water island connecting Korea to the Pacific through the East China Sea and Sea of Japan — makes it Korea’s natural providential gateway to Asia, suited to become both a marine-industry base and an international free-zone.
Elaboration. SMM sets the providential frame on the Chinese character itself: “The Chinese character je (濟) in Jejudo means ‘to cross.’ It means that it is a place to cross over and become the owner. Jejudo is also a nation of priests” (2.3. Ocean providence centering on Korea, 291-246, 1998.3.15). The strategic position is concrete: “Jejudo is naturally becoming an important center in Asia as an ocean gateway for Korea. The island is in a position that is connected to the Pacific Ocean through the East China Sea and the East Sea (Sea of Japan). Therefore, it is most important as a military stronghold. The waters in the port at Moseulpo are deep enough to allow for a significant global military port” (126-311, 1983.4.30). The Mount Halla / Mount Baekdu pairing extends the symbolism: “Mount Baekdu is like the husband, and Mount Halla is like the wife. These two are like partners” (284-247, 1997.4.18). Jejudo is the Korean female pole of an Adam-Eve geographical complementarity.
