Claim. The mind-body conflict caused by the Fall can only be resolved when God’s true love makes the mind the subject partner that takes command of the body — without God, the body cannot be conquered.
Elaboration. SMM names mind-body conflict as the operational legacy of the Fall: “Originally, the mind and body were to be indivisible: The human mind was to be God’s mind and the human body was to be a receptacle for it. The Fall, however, turned the human body over to the devil” (CSG 15.1 §2, 219-118, 1991.8.28). The conscience is “God’s agent within the human mind” and seeks goodness; the body “rebels against this” and seeks comfort. The resolution: “No one, though, can conquer the body without welcoming God in. Only through the power of God’s true love and truth can the mind as subject partner take command of the body as its object partner and realize the ideal of oneness with God.” Sanctification is therefore not willpower but love-mediated unification — the same true love that motivates God’s creation also resolves the human civil war.
