Claim. Husserl’s phenomenology — moving from natural things through eidetic reduction to essence and then to the noesis-noema structure of pure consciousness — unconsciously analyzes what Unification Thought identifies as the inner four-position foundation.

Elaboration. Husserl proposed phenomenology as a first philosophy grounding all sciences. Starting from Descartes’s ‘I think’ and excluding metaphysical dogma, he sought to describe pure consciousness intuitively. His motto ‘To things themselves!’ referred not to empirical facts but to pure phenomena within pure consciousness. The procedure has two stages: eidetic reduction (entering essence via ‘free variation’ — varying instances of, e.g., flowers until the unchanging essence is intuited) and transcendental reduction (phenomenological epochē, bracketing judgment about external existence to leave pure consciousness). The resulting structure of pure consciousness is noesis (intentional act) and noema (objective content) (Husserl).

Lee maps the layers onto Unification Thought. Things of the natural world are unified beings of Sungsang and Hyungsang. The essence reached through eidetic reduction corresponds to the Sungsang of existing beings. The noesis-noema structure of pure consciousness corresponds to the internal structure of mind — inner Sungsang (the act of thinking) and inner Hyungsang (the content thought about). Husserl’s analysis thus targets, without naming it, the inner four-position-foundation.

The diagnostic parallel with Descartes is explicit: ‘Husserl, like Descartes, unconsciously considered as important that which actually corresponds to the Unification Thought concept of the inner four position foundation. In other words, he tried to unify all sciences through an analysis of the inner four position foundation.’

This is among Lee’s most ambitious appropriations — claiming the most rigorous twentieth-century phenomenological project as a partial, unwitting articulation of UT structure. Critics will press on whether the mapping is genuinely structural or merely terminological relabeling; the test case is whether noema actually corresponds to inner Hyungsang in the substantive way Lee claims (noema is intentional content directed outward, while inner Hyungsang in UT is the conceptual material acted upon internally — these may not align as cleanly as the diagram suggests).
