Claim. Truth, goodness, and beauty are not co-equal independent values but are derivative — they appear and intensify only on the foundation of love between subject and object.

Elaboration. Lee makes a structural claim with significant consequences: love is not a fourth value alongside truth, goodness, and beauty, but is the foundation from which the other three arise (Hyungsang Value). The empirical evidence he offers is phenomenological: “the more parents love their children and the more children love their parents, the more beautiful the children will appear.” The same reciprocity intensifies the perceived truth and goodness of the object. Where truth/goodness/beauty appear without conscious love, Lee argues love is operating subconsciously.

This reorders standard axiological hierarchies. In the Greco-Christian tradition that Lee surveys later, the values of truth, goodness, and beauty are often treated as three peers (corresponding to intellect, will, emotion). Lee preserves the triadic structure at the level of faculties of mind but subordinates all three to love at the level of generative source. This aligns with the UT thesis that God created out of heart’s impulse to seek joy through love — so cosmically, love precedes the values it generates.

The move has practical implications for evangelism and ethics. It explains why purely intellectual presentations of truth fail to convert, why aesthetic appreciation deepens with relational commitment, and why moral exhortation without love is hollow (echoing 1 Cor. 13). It also explains why the family is the workshop of value-realization: the family is the densest locus of love, hence the densest locus of all three derived values.

This is one of the load-bearing claims for unifying religions: “the more we experience the Heart of God and lead a life of love, the more we will experience and actualize brilliant value.” If love is foundational and God is love, then God is the foundation of all value — providing the theological grounding for the absolute standard developed later in the chapter.
