Claim. As the core of Sungsang, heart is the motivating force that stimulates the three mental faculties — intellect pursues truth (yielding science and philosophy), emotion pursues beauty (yielding art), will pursues goodness (yielding morality and ethics) — and the totality of these activities is culture, making heart the driving force of all culture.
Elaboration. Lee establishes a tight functional architecture (A. A Being of Heart): each mental faculty has a characteristic activity, a characteristic value pursued, and a characteristic cultural output. Intellect (cognizing) → truth → science, philosophy. Emotion (feeling joy, anger, sorrow, etc.) → beauty → art. Will (determining one’s mind) → goodness → morality, ethics. Heart sits behind all three as motivational source.
The figure (Fig. 3.1) reinforces that this is not loose taxonomy but structural mapping. Politics, economics, law, media, and sports are also outputs of the three faculties operating together. “The totality of these intellectual, emotional, and volitional activities is culture.”
The fallen condition is precisely a culture in which the three faculties operate without heart’s motivation, becoming “separated from one another.” Science divorced from heart pursues truth as objective fact regardless of values (producing weapons of mass destruction). Art divorced from heart pursues beauty as self-expression regardless of others (producing decadence). Will divorced from heart pursues goodness as legalistic norm regardless of love (producing moralism without warmth).
This is why a unified culture is necessarily a culture of love — only heart can re-integrate the three faculties around a single motivating center. Fallen culture’s characteristic fragmentation (the modern “two cultures” of science vs. humanities, the modern art’s break from ethics, etc.) is diagnosable as heart-loss.
The consequence for vocation: “scientists must first be persons of values, or persons of character, before being scientists. In other words, ethics must become the basis of natural science.” Lee cites Rev. Moon’s ICUS conferences as institutional embodiment of this re-integration program. The structural claim is bold and worth a thread: that the culture-wars symptoms of late modernity (fact/value split, art/morality split, expertise/wisdom split) all trace to one architectural defect — heart removed as motivator of the three faculties.
