Claim. Because Heart is the core of God’s Sungsang and (by likeness) of the human sungsang, all human cultural activity — academic, artistic, normative — should be motivated by Heart and aimed at the actualization of love, producing a ‘culture of heart’ or ‘culture of love.’
Elaboration. Heart is the innermost core of Inner Sungsang, which is deeper than Inner Hyungsang. The same structure applies to human beings. Heart is therefore ‘the driving force behind human intellectual, emotional, and volitional activities,’ constantly stimulating them (Heart and Culture).
The three major cultural domains map onto the three faculties: philosophy and science develop through intellectual activity; painting, music, sculpture, architecture through emotional activity; religion, ethics, morality, education through volitional activity. Their totality constitutes culture. In an unfallen humanity, all three would be motivated by Heart and aim at love; such a culture would ‘last forever’ and be called the ‘culture of heart,’ ‘culture of love,’ or ‘culture of harmony.’
Due to the Fall, Heart was ‘blocked’ as the core of the human sungsang and its impulse ‘distorted into an impulse for egotism, or selfishness.’ Hence cultures throughout history have been unprincipled, oscillating in rise-and-fall cycles. The remedy is concrete: ‘eradicate egotism, and revitalize the impulse of heart in the core of the sungsang of human beings.’ This transforms all cultural fields to be motivated by Heart and aim at love.
This claim sets up UC’s broad mandate to engage politics, economy, science, arts, and religion all at once — the unified culture-of-heart vision is the metaphysical warrant for UPF, IAYSP, Universal Peace Federation, and the scientific/academic outreach institutions. It also explains why the church does not treat ‘religion’ as a separate domain from culture writ large; religion is just one branch of the same Heart-rooted activity. Critics from secular cultural theory engage on whether ‘love’ is operationalizable enough across politics, economy, and arts to do real normative work. Worth a thread once a counter exists.
