Claim. The culture humans were originally designed to actualize is a “culture of heart” in which intellect, emotion, and will are unified around love — and Rev. Moon’s New Cultural Revolution explicitly aims at establishing this culture in contrast to failed attempts like China’s Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.
Elaboration. Lee names the missed possibility “Adam culture” — the culture of heart that God originally intended to realize through Adam, which the fall prevented (A. A Being of Heart). What followed historically were cultures based on self-centeredness, in which intellect, emotion, and will became separated from one another.
The diagnostic example given is economic: in current culture, making money is treated as the supreme purpose. In a culture of heart, by contrast, “if someone were to live in isolated affluence while others lived in poverty, that person could never live comfortably, but would feel stricken by pain in his or her heart.” Voluntary sharing would replace both forced redistribution and self-justified hoarding. People would naturally want to actualize God’s love through economic activity.
The historical foil is named: Mao’s Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution in China. The leaders “attempted to build a culture based on labor, in accordance with the materialist dialectic, but their efforts resulted only in the oppression of human nature and the delay of modernization.” The implicit contrast is sharp — both Mao’s revolution and Moon’s New Cultural Revolution claim to establish a true culture, but only heart-centered culture can succeed because only heart re-integrates the divided faculties.
Lee briefly distinguishes “civilization” (the material/external aspect of intellectual-emotional-volitional outputs) from “culture” (the spiritual/internal aspect, especially religion and art), while noting the distinction blurs in practice and UT uses the terms interchangeably.
The claim is structurally evangelistic: UC is not just one religion among many but the source of the only viable cultural template — a strong claim that critics will engage on whether “culture of heart” is operationalizable beyond rhetoric, and whether the equation of “true culture” with one movement’s program is itself a totalizing claim of the kind UT criticizes in Marxism.
