Claim. Within the Original Sungsang there is an inner duality: the Inner Sungsang — the functional/subjective faculties of intellect, emotion, and will — acts upon the Inner Hyungsang, which is the objective content (ideas, concepts, laws, mathematical principles).
Elaboration. Lee structures God’s mind in nested duality. Intellect comprises perception (sensing things as reflected on five senses or intuitively), understanding (perceiving cause and effect), and reason (comprehending universal truths and conceptualizing). Emotion is the faculty of joy, anger, sadness, happiness. Will is the faculty of desiring, intentionality, determination. All three operate actively on the Inner Hyungsang (Inner Sungsang).
Lee illustrates the three-stage intellect with Newton’s discovery of universal gravitation: perceiving the apple fall (perception), reflecting on cause and concluding the earth and apple attract (understanding), then inferring that all material bodies with mass attract one another (reason/universal cognition). The stages are not interchangeable — each presupposes the previous.
This tripartite mental structure is load-bearing for UT’s later claims about culture (academic fields develop through intellect, arts through emotion, religion/ethics/morality through will, with the three values of truth/beauty/goodness corresponding to each faculty) and for the doctrine that ‘spiritual apperception’ is the unified faculty of cognition. The claim that God’s mind has the same tripartite structure as the human mind follows from the principle of creation-in-likeness: the human mind ‘resembles that of God,’ which licenses Lee to use human introspection as the methodological route to understanding God’s interior. Critics from apophatic theology engage on whether this anthropomorphizes God to an unacceptable degree; Lee’s reply (implicit) is that without such resemblance, knowledge of God would be impossible in principle.
