Claim. Unification logic begins not with the forms and laws of thought but with the question of why thinking takes place — answering that humans think because God thinks, and God established the purpose-of-creation (actualizing love based on Heart) prior to creating the universe.

Elaboration. Sang Hun Lee’s foundational move is to reverse the inquiry order (The Starting Point and Direction of Thinking). Traditional logic asks: what are the laws and forms of thinking? Unification logic first asks: why does thinking happen at all?

The answer is theological. Prior to creating the universe, God engaged in thinking — establishing the purpose of actualizing love based on Heart, then making plans accordingly. This constituted His thinking, His Logos (Word). Humans, created in God’s likeness, do the same: establish the purpose of actualizing love based on heart, then think in order to accomplish that purpose. That is the original way of human thinking.

‘Purpose’ here is the purpose-of-creation — divided into the purpose for the whole (serving family, neighbors, nation, humankind, and God with love) and the purpose for the individual (satisfying one’s own desires). The dual purpose structure is hierarchical: purpose-for-whole takes priority, and individual purpose exists for the whole purpose. Therefore thinking is to be carried out primarily to actualize the whole-purpose, secondarily the individual purpose.

The radical consequence: ‘originally human beings are supposed to think not for the purpose of satisfying their own individual purpose, but for the purpose of loving others.’ This is what fallen thinking has lost — egoistic thinking is a deviation from the original direction of thinking, not just a moral failing but a logical one.

This grounding makes Unification logic structurally different from any logic Lee surveys. Formal logic ignores purpose; Hegel’s logic has development without Heart; Marx has matter without love; Kant has knowledge without direction. Lee’s wager is that you cannot understand how thinking should work without first identifying what thinking is for — and that question is unanswerable apart from the principle-of-creation.
