Summary. John the Baptist (Matthew 3, John 1) was born to Zechariah and Elizabeth, lived as a Nazirite-like ascetic in the wilderness, baptized in the Jordan, and identified Jesus as the Lamb of God. In DP his role is decisive: as the foretold returning Elijah he was to become Jesus’s primary disciple and prepare Israel to recognise the Messiah. His later doubt from prison (“Are you the One, or shall we look for another?”) is read as the central providential failure that forced Jesus onto the path of the cross.
