Claim. Without a providential nation grounded in God’s sovereignty, there is no homeland for any human being — and the restoration of God’s nation, not the perfecting of existing nations, is the universal hope toward which all individual, family, tribal, and worldly life is ordered.
Elaboration. SMM frames nationhood as inescapable: “Every person, regardless of who he may be, needs to live in his own nation. This is the absolute condition that all human beings must fulfill … In their hearts they need to envision utopia and strive to live for their nation and ultimate goal by establishing laws of righteousness and complying with them. Do you have a nation of God? Since you don’t have one, you need to establish one” (2.5. We should seek the homeland, 18-213, 1967.6.8). The nation must have the classical three constituents: “For a nation to be established there must be sovereignty, territory, and citizenry. The same is true of the Kingdom of God. Parents are in the place of sovereignty, true sons and daughters are in the place of the citizens, and the Kingdom is in the place of the territory” (35-279, 1970.10.25). And the patriotism is universal: “We should be ready to leave our mother and father, if need be, to love our nation. Furthermore, we should be prepared to forsake our nation to love the world. Moreover, we should be willing to renounce the world in order to love God” (100-80, 1978.10.8).
