Claim. Parental love, conjugal love, and children’s love are the three great loves through which human happiness is perfected.
Elaboration. SMM says that God’s love is expressed as “parental love, conjugal love and children’s love” and that these three great loves “make it possible for human beings to exist forever” (CSG 4.2 §1, 20-38, 1968.3.31). When they are perfected, “happiness is perfected”; when they are lacking, “misfortune sets in.” The section extends this from parents and spouses to siblings: a complete family includes father, mother, brothers, sisters, and self, with the number seven symbolizing perfection in love. Peace begins where these family loves are established as a three-dimensional order centered on God’s laws of love.
