Claim. Because Satan would never voluntarily yield to Jesus, God revealed the subjugation course in three escalating scopes — Jacob walked it symbolically at the family level, Moses walked it as image at the national level, and Jesus walked it substantially at the worldwide level — so that each later figure could pattern his course on the earlier one.

Elaboration. restoration requires fallen people to bring Satan to voluntary submission and become his master, which they accomplish only by fulfilling their portion of responsibility. Satan does not even meekly surrender to God, so God called jacob to demonstrate the course in symbolic form within his own family (dp-3-the-providence-of-restoration-in-abraham-s-family §3.2). moses then developed the course to the level of image at the national scope, restoring Canaan as a chosen-people territory. Finally, jesus walked the worldwide substantial course, with the original aim of restoring Canaan as the Kingdom of God on earth.

Moses prefigured Jesus explicitly: Deut 18:18’s prophecy “the Lord God will raise up a prophet like you” referred to Jesus, who would “stand in a position comparable to Moses and follow Moses’ course as the model.” Jesus’s own self-witness — “the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing” (19) — meant he was following the model God had disclosed through Moses. Jacob’s course is therefore the model for the Israelites and ultimately for all of humanity, since every believer who would bring Satan to submission walks in Jesus’s footsteps.
