Claim. Logos is reason-law — the unity of reason (characterized by freedom) and law (characterized by necessity) — so humans as beings of logos are simultaneously rational beings acting by free will and normative beings living according to law, with true freedom consisting in willingly observing the law rather than ignoring it.
Elaboration. Logos arose within the Original Image through inner give-and-take between Inner Sungsang (where reason plays the leading role) and Inner Hyungsang (where law plays the leading role), centered on purpose grounded in Heart (B. A Being of Logos). Therefore Logos is structurally “reason-law,” and humans created through Logos inherit this dual character.
Lee’s freedom-vs-license distinction is operationalized with the train analogy: “a train, as long as it remains on its tracks, can run rapidly or move slowly, go forward or move backward. If, however, it leaves the tracks, it will not move at all.” Freedom requires structure; departure from structure is not greater freedom but self-destruction.
The deeper claim is that the law humans should follow is not arbitrary commandment but “the same law that operates throughout the entire universe; specifically, it is the law of give and receive action.” And because Logos was motivated by Heart at its formation, “originally, the law of the universe is motivated by Heart, and the purpose of the law is the actualization of love.” Law is not opposed to love; law is love’s structural medium.
Confucius’s Analects citation — “At seventy I followed my heart’s desire without overstepping the line” — exemplifies the perfected being of logos: at maturity, free will and law are so unified that obedience is spontaneous.
The family-extended norms: vertical norm (parents-children), horizontal norm (spouses, siblings), and individual norm (for perfecting personal character). These extend outward to society and nation. Family logos-norms are the foundation of all higher-level norms.
The fall consequence: humans “failed to become beings of logos,” producing the modern situation in which families break down and nations descend into chaos. The diagnostic is again structural — restoration of original nature as beings of logos automatically restores orderly family-society-nation. Critics will press whether identifying universal law with give-and-take action smuggles in too much UC-specific metaphysics.
