Claim. Every created being is examined from two perspectives: as an ‘individual truth being’ (considered independently, resembling the attributes of the Original Image) and as a ‘connected being’ (the same entity viewed in its relationships to other beings).
Elaboration. Lee introduces the master distinction that organizes the rest of the chapter (ut-02-ontology-a-theory-of-being). An individual truth being is the entity in itself — its own sungsang and hyungsang, yang/yin, and individual image. A connected being is the same entity considered as a relatum: standing in subject-object correlation with other beings, possessing dual purposes (purpose for the individual and purpose for the whole), occupying a position in an ordered system, and engaged in give and receive action.
The distinction is methodological, not metaphysical: there are not two kinds of being, only two viewpoints on the same being. Yet the distinction does ontological work. It allows UT to claim that no being is truly isolated (against an atomistic ontology) while also rejecting the materialist-dialectical claim that beings have no stable independent identity apart from their relations. Each being possesses both an unchanging identity-maintaining aspect (visible in its individual-truth-being analysis) and a relational developmental aspect (visible in its connected-being analysis).
Structurally, this two-viewpoint approach mirrors the two-stage structure of the Original Image (inner and outer four-position-foundation). The individual truth being corresponds to the inner four position foundation; the connected being corresponds to the outer. Lee will use the connected-being analysis to critique materialist ‘interconnectedness’ (which acknowledges relations but cannot explain why), and to argue that the universe is ‘one huge, organic body’ centered on purpose. The framing is doing heavy lifting for later anti-Communist arguments.
