Claim. Israel’s divided kingdoms of north and south (Israel/Judah) and Western Christendom’s divided kingdoms of east and west (Holy Roman Empire/France) are substantial parallels of the same providential function — third-generation fracture of the monarchic society into a Cain-side and an Abel-side kingdom — followed by the same failure mode: internal warning by prophets, then external chastisement when the warnings are unheeded.

Elaboration. Per Part 2 Ch 5 §4: Solomon’s idolatry split the united kingdom on his death. Northern Israel (ten tribes under Jeroboam) took the Cain-position; Judah (two tribes under Rehoboam from David’s line) took the Abel-position. Israel lasted ~210 years with nineteen kings and nine dynasties, none righteous, and was destroyed by Assyria. Judah lasted ~400 years with twenty kings in one dynastic line, finally exiled to Babylon.

The NT-age parallel: the Christian empire divided “in the third generation” — Charlemagne’s grandsons partitioned it into East Franks, West Franks, and Italy. Italy reverted to East Franks; under Otto I the East-Frank kingdom became the Holy Roman Empire claiming Roman-imperial heir-status. The Holy Roman Empire took the Abel-position relative to France as West-Frank kingdom (a Cain/Abel polarity inversion from the OT case where Judah-south held Abel — DP does not flag this).

The failure mode is symmetric: when Israel strayed from the Temple, God sent prophets (Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah) to admonish; when unheeded, God chastised externally through gentile nations (Syria, Assyria, Babylon). In the NT parallel, God sent monks (Aquinas, Francis of Assisi) to admonish the corrupt papacy; when unheeded, God chastised externally by sending Christians to fight Muslims — the providential reason for the eight Crusades (1095 onward, ~200 years).

Both periods close the same way: gentile-nation exile destroys northern Israel and exiles Judah; Crusade-defeat strips papal prestige and credibility, decimates the feudal lords and knights, exhausts treasury resources, and erodes monarchic Christianity.

Significance. Establishes the prophet-then-chastisement internal-and-external sequence as a constant providential mechanism across both ages. The 8-Crusade-as-providential-chastisement reading is one of DP’s most distinctive Western-historiographic claims.
