Claim. When a central figure fails to restore horizontally the accumulated vertical indemnity conditions, the numerical periods themselves are carried vertically as extended fixed-length periods across subsequent generations. The four numerical periods (twelve, four, twenty-one, forty) become 120 years, 40 years, 21 years, and 40 years — and these specific lengths cascade through Abraham’s family and again through Israel’s kingdom history.

Elaboration. Per Part 2 Ch 4 §2.6:

  • Abraham was meant to restore horizontally the conditions accumulated from Adam’s and Noah’s families through his symbolic offering. He failed. The numerical periods — 120 years, 40 days, 21 days, 40 days — that he was to fulfill horizontally then had to be restored as vertical extensions.
  • In Abraham’s family these became: 120 years from Abraham’s departure from Haran until Jacob purchased the birthright; 40 years until Jacob received Isaac’s blessing and traveled to Haran; 21 years of Jacob’s Haran labor; 40 years from Jacob’s return to Canaan until his family entered Egypt.
  • The same cascade-pattern repeats at national scale after Saul’s failure (developed in §§3.3–3.6): 120 years of the united kingdom, 400 years of the divided kingdoms, 210 years of exile-and-return, 400 years of preparation for the Messiah.

Significance. This is the structural rule that converts horizontal-restoration failures into multi-generational chronologies. It explains why Israel’s specific history adopts the precise lengths it does: each segment is the vertical extension of a numerical indemnity Noah/Abraham did not complete horizontally, carried forward and applied at national scale.

Three structural moves to note:

  • Length-correspondence: 120-day → 120-year; 40-day → 40-year; 21-day → 21-year; 40-day → 40-year. (No multiplication by 10 here — straight day-to-year substitution.)
  • Order-preservation: the four periods cascade in the same order horizontally and vertically. The Abrahamic-family 120→40→21→40 sequence and the post-Saul national 120→400→210→400 sequence are claimed as the same providential pattern at different scales.
  • Cross-scale parallelism: this rule is what makes dp-providence-progresses-in-spiral-with-parallel-periods operationalizable. Without it, the spiral would lack determinate period lengths.
