The 400-year period from Malachi to Jesus and the 400-year period from the Protestant Reformation (1517) to the Second Advent are substantial parallels of the same providential function — a final age in which all vertical indemnity accumulated from the prior 4000 (resp. 6000) years of providential failure is restored horizontally — and both include three parallel sub-processes: a 40-year-Jacob-style preparation, an internal-and-external religious-philosophical preparation, and a worldwide environmental preparation for the Messiah’s worldwide reception.
Elaboration. Per Part 2 Ch 5 §6: vertical indemnity accumulated through Satan’s repeated defilement of 40-day and 40-year foundation-of-faith cycles over 4000 years. Malachi-to-Jesus was the final OT-age cycle restoring that vertical load horizontally; Reformation-to-Second-Advent plays the same role for the 6000-year accumulation.
Jacob-preparation parallel: both restore the ~40 years from Jacob’s return from Haran until entering Egypt. Hardships mirror Jacob’s pre-Joseph and the Jews’ pre-Jesus suffering — Christians endure internal tribulations in the NT period (philosophical turmoil); First Israel endured external tribulations (Persia, Greece, Egypt, Syria, Rome).
Religious-philosophical preparation: in the OT age, justification was by external conditions (Law, sacrifice), so preparation featured external gentile-hardship. In the NT age, justification is internal (prayer, faith), so Renaissance humanism, the Enlightenment, and religious-freedom movements have produced philosophical-theological confusion — the internal counterpart to OT external hardship.
Worldwide environmental preparation: 430 years before Jesus, God sent Malachi to deepen messianic expectation, and God founded regional religions — Buddhism via Gautama (565-485 BCE) in India, Greek classical civilization through Socrates (470-399 BCE), Confucian ethics through Confucius (552-479 BCE). Jesus was to unify Judaism, Hellenism, Buddhism, and Confucianism into one Christian worldwide civilization; Roman roads and Hellenistic culture provided dissemination. The NT parallel: post-Renaissance progress in politics, economy, science, and culture has reached a global zenith; Western democratic expansion and modern transport bridge East and West, preparing the environment for the returning Christ’s teachings to spread worldwide.
Significance. Locates Western expansion, Renaissance science, and global communication as providential infrastructure for the Second Advent rather than autonomous developments. The Buddha/Socrates/Confucius identification as God-founded preparatory religions is one of DP’s strongest comparative-religion-positive moves, framing world religions as parallel arms of the same providence.
